This condition develops when bacteria gain access to the central nervous system and establish an infection that the body attempts to wall off, creating an encapsulated pocket of infectious material. As the abscess grows, it creates pressure within the rigid confines of the skull, compressing normal brain tissue and disrupting neurological function. The location of the abscess determines which functions are affected, with symptoms ranging from mild balance disturbances to severe seizures and paralysis. Additionally, toxins released by the bacteria and inflammatory responses to the infection cause direct damage to brain tissue. Left untreated, brain abscesses are typically fatal, though with aggressive treatment some rabbits can recover.
Treatment of brain abscesses in rabbits is challenging and requires prolonged antibiotic therapy guided by culture and sensitivity testing whenever possible. Unlike abscesses elsewhere in the body, surgical removal of brain abscesses is generally not feasible, so treatment relies on medications that can penetrate brain tissue and the abscess capsule. The prognosis varies widely depending on the abscess location, the rabbit's overall health, how quickly treatment is initiated, and the specific bacteria involved. Early detection and immediate consultation with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian are essential for the best possible outcome.
