Baylisascaris procyonis, commonly known as raccoon roundworm, represents one of the most devastating parasitic threats to domestic rabbits in North America and other regions where raccoons are present. This large roundworm naturally inhabits the intestinal tract of raccoons, where it causes minimal harm to its definitive host. However, when rabbits accidentally ingest Baylisascaris eggs from contaminated environments, the larvae undergo aberrant migration through body tissues, causing severe and often fatal damage to the central nervous system, eyes, and internal organs. This condition, known as neural larva migrans or visceral larva migrans depending on the tissues affected, progresses rapidly and carries an extremely poor prognosis once neurological symptoms develop. Baylisascaris infection is considered one of the most serious parasitic diseases affecting rabbits and represents a significant zoonotic concern as humans can also be infected.
The transmission of Baylisascaris to rabbits occurs through environmental contamination. Infected raccoons shed millions of microscopic eggs in their feces daily, and these eggs can persist in soil for years while remaining infectious. Common areas of contamination include raccoon latrines (communal defecation sites), areas around garbage containers, under decks, in barns, and anywhere raccoons frequent. Rabbits become infected when they ingest these eggs while grazing, exploring contaminated areas, or consuming hay, vegetables, or other foods that have contacted contaminated soil. The eggs are extremely resistant to environmental conditions and most disinfectants, making decontamination extremely difficult once an area becomes contaminated.
The impact of Baylisascaris infection on rabbit health is catastrophic. Once eggs are ingested, larvae hatch in the intestinal tract and begin migrating through body tissues. Unlike in raccoons where the parasites remain in the gut, in rabbits these larvae continue migrating indefinitely, causing progressive tissue destruction. The larvae have a particular predilection for the central nervous system, where they cause severe inflammatory damage as they tunnel through brain and spinal cord tissue. This results in progressive neurological deterioration including loss of coordination, head tilt, circling, paralysis, blindness, and eventual death. The severity and speed of symptom progression depends on the number of eggs ingested, with heavy infections causing rapid, devastating neurological decline within days to weeks.
Treatment for established Baylisascaris infection is largely ineffective, making prevention absolutely critical. Once larvae have entered the central nervous system, the damage they cause is typically irreversible, and antiparasitic medications cannot effectively reach larvae within brain tissue. Even if some larvae are killed by treatment, the inflammatory response to dying parasites can worsen neurological damage. The prognosis for rabbits showing neurological symptoms is extremely poor, with most cases progressing to death or requiring humane euthanasia due to poor quality of life. For this reason, all efforts must focus on preventing exposure through environmental management, restricting rabbit access to potentially contaminated areas, and maintaining vigilant awareness of raccoon activity in the rabbit's environment. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian to assess local risk and implement preventive strategies is essential for rabbit owners in areas where raccoons are present.
