Aspergillosis is a rare but serious fungal infection in rabbits caused by opportunistic fungi of the genus Aspergillus, most commonly Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger. This condition occurs when fungal spores, which are ubiquitous in the environment, are inhaled and establish infection in a susceptible host. While healthy rabbits with intact immune systems typically resist Aspergillus infection despite constant environmental exposure, immunocompromised individuals or those with pre-existing respiratory damage may develop clinical disease. Aspergillosis in rabbits is considered rare compared to other respiratory conditions, but it represents a serious diagnostic and therapeutic challenge when it does occur.
The Aspergillus fungus produces enormous numbers of spores that become airborne and are present virtually everywhere in the environment, particularly in decaying vegetation, soil, hay, straw, and other organic materials. These spores are small enough to reach the deepest parts of the respiratory system when inhaled. In healthy rabbits, the immune system's innate defenses, including physical barriers and immune cells, effectively prevent the spores from germinating and establishing infection. When these defenses are compromised by factors such as immunosuppressive disease, prolonged antibiotic or corticosteroid treatment, malnutrition, or chronic stress, the fungal spores can germinate and invade respiratory tissues. From the initial respiratory infection, aspergillosis may remain localized or disseminate through the bloodstream to affect multiple organ systems.
The impact of aspergillosis on affected rabbits is typically severe, reflecting both the direct tissue damage caused by fungal invasion and the underlying immunocompromised state that allowed infection to develop. Respiratory aspergillosis causes progressive damage to the lungs and airways, leading to increasingly compromised breathing and oxygenation. Because rabbits are obligate nasal breathers, respiratory disease is particularly concerning in this species; any degree of respiratory compromise represents a serious problem. When aspergillosis disseminates to other organs such as the brain, kidneys, or liver, the prognosis worsens considerably. The chronic nature of fungal infections and the difficulty of achieving tissue penetration with antifungal medications make treatment challenging and prolonged.
Treatment of aspergillosis in rabbits requires long-term antifungal therapy combined with supportive care and, critically, identification and correction of predisposing factors. Early detection improves the chances of successful treatment, but because aspergillosis is rare and its symptoms overlap with more common respiratory conditions, diagnosis is often delayed. Rabbits hide signs of illness as an evolutionary survival strategy, making early detection particularly challenging. Consultation with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced with exotic animal diseases is essential for both diagnosis and management. While some rabbits respond well to aggressive treatment, others succumb to the infection despite intervention, reflecting the severity of this condition and often the significant underlying immune compromise present in affected animals.
