Chronic dental disease creates inflammatory states that can suppress bone marrow function. GI stasis commonly develops secondary to anemia when affected rabbits feel too weak or unwell to eat normally, creating a dangerous cycle as gut stasis further compromises health. Kidney disease may both cause and result from anemia through multiple mechanisms. Parasitic infestations causing anemia often coexist with skin irritation and secondary bacterial infections.

Conditions with similar symptoms that may be confused with anemia or coexist with blood disorders include other causes of weakness and lethargy. E. cuniculi infection can cause progressive weakness and decreased activity that mimics anemia, and may also directly affect red blood cells. Hepatic lipidosis develops rapidly when anorexic rabbits mobilize fat stores. Organ hypoxia from severe anemia can cause lasting damage to the kidneys, liver, heart, and brain. Secondary infections may develop in immunocompromised anemic rabbits. Falls and injuries result from weakness and poor coordination. Cardiac complications including arrhythmias and heart failure can result from severe chronic anemia. Prevention of these complications through early recognition and treatment of anemia significantly improves outcomes.
