Parasitic alopecia in rabbits refers to hair loss caused by external parasites, most commonly fur mites, that infest the skin and coat. The most frequent culprits are Cheyletiella parasitovorax, commonly known as rabbit fur mites or walking dandruff, and less commonly Sarcoptes scabiei or Psoroptes cuniculi affecting the skin and ears respectively. These microscopic parasites live on or in the skin, feeding on tissue debris, skin cells, or blood depending on the species, and their presence causes irritation, itching, and damage that leads to hair loss. Parasitic conditions are among the most common causes of alopecia in rabbits, particularly in animals from pet stores, shelters, or multi-rabbit environments where parasite transmission is more likely.
The mechanisms by which parasites cause hair loss vary by species but generally involve a combination of direct damage, inflammatory response, and behavioral effects. Mites cause mechanical damage to skin and hair follicles, trigger inflammatory reactions that disrupt hair growth, and provoke scratching behavior that pulls out or breaks hair. The constant irritation from parasite activity compromises the skin's ability to maintain healthy hair growth. Some rabbits develop hypersensitivity to parasite saliva or feces, causing more severe reactions even with relatively small parasite loads. The resulting hair loss may be patchy or diffuse depending on the parasite type and severity of infestation.

The itching and discomfort from parasite infestation causes constant distress, affecting behavior, sleep, and overall quality of life. Scratching can cause secondary skin wounds vulnerable to bacterial infection. The stress and discomfort may reduce appetite, potentially triggering GI stasis, a life-threatening emergency in rabbits. Furthermore, many external parasites affecting rabbits can spread to other rabbits and sometimes to other household pets or even humans, making treatment important for household health as well as the affected rabbit's wellbeing.
The good news is that parasitic alopecia is highly treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications. Once the specific parasite is identified through veterinary examination and testing, targeted treatment typically eliminates the infestation effectively. Hair regrowth follows as the skin heals and normal follicle function resumes. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian ensures proper diagnosis and safe treatment, as some antiparasitic medications used in other species are dangerous for rabbits.
