When these functions fail, horses experience a cascade of clinical problems including weight loss, jaundice, bleeding disorders, photosensitization, and hepatic encephalopathy—a neurological syndrome caused by the accumulation of toxins, particularly ammonia, that the damaged liver can no longer process.
While liver failure carries a guarded to poor prognosis, early intervention and aggressive supportive care can sometimes allow partial recovery if sufficient functional liver tissue remains and the inciting cause is eliminated.
