Dropped sole refers to more severe presentation where the sole has descended even further, sometimes becoming convex rather than flat, typically following laminitic episodes.
Flat feet affect horses across breeds but show notable hereditary patterns in certain populations. Thoroughbreds commonly inherit flat-footed conformation, a characteristic that has persisted despite its potential to limit soundness. Some Warmblood lines also demonstrate this trait. The condition ranges in severity from mildly reduced concavity causing occasional sensitivity to severely dropped soles rendering horses persistently foot-sore. Both front and hind feet may be affected, though front feet more commonly cause clinical problems due to their greater weight-bearing demands.
The impact of flat feet on equine health and performance relates directly to the reduced protection afforded to sensitive sole structures. Horses with minimal sole depth bruise easily on hard or uneven surfaces, developing lameness that limits athletic function. The reduced shock-absorbing capacity places additional stress on internal hoof structures and may predispose to secondary conditions. Performance horses with flat feet may be limited in their competitive potential by surface sensitivity. Severely affected horses may struggle with routine activities on anything other than very forgiving footing.
Treatability of flat feet focuses on management and protection rather than cure, as the underlying conformational tendency cannot be fundamentally altered. Appropriate farriery maintains optimal hoof balance and may incorporate protective pads to augment insufficient sole depth. Environmental management reduces exposure to damaging surfaces. Nutritional support optimizes whatever sole growth potential exists. While flat feet cannot be made normal, most affected horses achieve functional soundness with appropriate management, though some limitations may persist for the most severely affected individuals.
