Dermatophytosis affects horses of all ages, breeds, and disciplines worldwide, though certain populations face increased risk due to management and immune factors. Young horses, particularly weanlings and yearlings experiencing their first exposure to the fungi, are especially susceptible and often develop more severe infections. Horses in crowded conditions such as training facilities, show barns, and breeding operations face high transmission risk due to close contact and shared equipment. The condition occurs year-round but often increases during cooler, more humid months when conditions favor fungal survival and when horses spend more time in close quarters.
The impact of dermatophytosis on equine health extends beyond the visible skin damage to include significant management and biosecurity implications. While the infection itself rarely causes serious illness, the hair loss and skin damage can be extensive and cosmetically significant, particularly problematic for show horses. Affected horses may experience mild to moderate itching and discomfort, and secondary bacterial infections can complicate severe cases. Perhaps most significantly, the highly contagious nature of ringworm can lead to rapid spread through entire barns or populations, and the zoonotic potential means the infection can be transmitted to humans handling infected horses.
