Cellulitis can develop when infection spreads from follicles into surrounding subcutaneous tissue, creating diffuse swelling and potentially serious systemic illness. Abscess formation may occur when bacterial infection becomes walled off and accumulates pus. Scarring and permanent hair loss may result from severe or chronic infections. Secondary fungal infections may develop in damaged skin, particularly if corticosteroids have been used inappropriately. Chronic, recurrent bacterial folliculitis can lead to hyperpigmentation and skin thickening that may be permanent.
