This condition develops when bacteria or fungi become trapped within the corneal tissue, typically following a penetrating injury or deep corneal ulcer, and the overlying epithelium heals over the infected area, effectively sealing the organisms within the cornea. The resulting abscess appears as a focal area of yellow or white opacity within the cornea, often surrounded by corneal edema that gives the eye a blue or cloudy appearance.
Corneal abscesses occur with significant frequency in horses compared to other domestic species, reflecting the horse's large prominent eyes that are particularly susceptible to trauma and the rich microbial environment in which horses live. The condition can affect horses of any age, breed, or use, though horses in certain environments with greater exposure to plant material, dust, and debris may face elevated risk. Prompt recognition and treatment are essential because corneal abscesses can rapidly progress to threaten not only vision but the entire globe if infection spreads or the cornea perforates.
