Brooklynella hostilis is a highly pathogenic ciliated protozoan parasite that causes one of the most devastating diseases affecting marine aquarium fish, particularly clownfish and other anemonefish species. This microscopic organism attacks the skin and gills of infected fish, causing rapid destruction of epithelial tissue, excessive mucus production, and respiratory distress. The disease progresses with alarming speed, often killing susceptible fish within 24 to 48 hours of symptom onset if treatment is not initiated immediately. The parasite's common name, clownfish disease, reflects its notorious association with Amphiprion species, though it can infect many marine fish.
Brooklynella infections primarily affect wild-caught marine fish and recently imported specimens that have experienced the stress of collection, transport, and acclimation. Clownfish are particularly susceptible due to their thick mucus coats, which provide abundant substrate for the parasite to feed upon, and their stress responses during handling and shipping. However, Brooklynella can infect most marine fish species when conditions favor parasite proliferation. Angelfish, tangs, wrasses, and many other commonly kept marine species have documented susceptibility to this parasite.
The impact of Brooklynella infection on affected fish is severe and frequently fatal without intervention. The parasite feeds on epithelial cells and mucus, causing extensive tissue destruction that manifests as sloughing skin, excessive mucus production, and gill damage leading to respiratory failure.
