Lumpy skin disease is a severe viral infection affecting cattle caused by the lumpy skin disease virus, a member of the Capripoxvirus genus within the Poxviridae family. This economically devastating disease is characterized by the development of firm, raised nodules throughout the skin, along with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and significant systemic illness. The virus shares close genetic relationships with sheeppox and goatpox viruses, though it specifically targets cattle and water buffalo. First identified in Zambia in 1929, lumpy skin disease has since spread across Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe, making it one of the most important transboundary animal diseases affecting the global cattle industry.
Lumpy skin disease primarily affects cattle of all ages, breeds, and production types, though certain populations demonstrate increased susceptibility to severe clinical manifestations. Bos taurus breeds, including popular dairy breeds like Holsteins and beef breeds such as Herefords, typically experience more severe disease compared to Bos indicus breeds like Brahman cattle, which often show milder symptoms or subclinical infections. The disease affects both dairy and beef operations, with morbidity rates varying dramatically from 5 to 45 percent depending on the cattle population, vector density, and environmental conditions. In naive populations encountering the virus for the first time, morbidity can reach exceptionally high levels.
The economic and welfare impact of lumpy skin disease extends far beyond the immediate clinical effects on individual animals. Affected cattle experience significant production losses including decreased milk yield in dairy cattle, reduced weight gain in beef animals, permanent hide damage rendering skins worthless for leather production, and reproductive complications including temporary or permanent infertility.
