Pastures should be divided into paddocks to allow rotational grazing, preventing overgrazing and promoting even forage utilization. Good fencing is crucial not only for containing cattle but also for predator deterrence, particularly for calves and vulnerable animals.

Fences should be at least 48 inches high for adequate containment. Gates must be sturdy and wide enough to allow equipment passage. Predator protection is particularly important for calves, though adult cattle face fewer threats than smaller livestock. Coyotes, feral dogs, and in some regions, bears or mountain lions may prey on newborn calves.
