Laminitis, also known as founder or pododermatitis aseptica diffusa, is a systemic metabolic condition in cattle that causes inflammation and disruption of the sensitive laminae within the hoof. The laminae are the delicate structures that suspend the pedal bone within the hoof capsule and provide the interface between the living tissues and the horn production zones. When these structures become inflamed, the normal process of horn formation is disrupted, leading to poor-quality hoof growth and structural changes that predispose to a range of secondary hoof lesions. While acute laminitis with severe lameness does occur, the subclinical form is far more common and economically significant in cattle populations.
Laminitis affects dairy cattle at significantly higher rates than beef cattle, with prevalence estimates suggesting that 20 to 40 percent of dairy cows may experience some degree of laminitis during their productive lives. The condition is most commonly associated with the metabolic challenges of early lactation, particularly the transition period from three weeks before to three weeks after calving. Both first-lactation heifers and mature cows are susceptible, though the risk factors and manifestations may differ between groups. All four feet are typically affected, though the hind feet often show more severe changes due to their greater weight-bearing burden in dairy cattle.
The economic and welfare impact of laminitis in dairy operations is substantial and extends well beyond the immediate costs of treatment. Laminitis is considered a major underlying cause of the common hoof lesions responsible for lameness in dairy cattle, including sole ulcers, white line disease, and heel erosion. Studies have estimated that lameness costs dairy producers $75 to $400 or more per affected cow annually through reduced milk production, impaired fertility, increased treatment costs, and premature culling. The chronic pain associated with laminitis-related hoof lesions represents a significant animal welfare concern that is increasingly recognized by consumers and regulatory authorities alike.
Laminitis is treatable, though the extent of recovery depends heavily on the severity and chronicity of the condition at the time of intervention. Acute cases identified early and treated promptly have reasonable prognosis for resolution, though some structural changes to the hoof may persist. Subclinical laminitis, which often goes unrecognized until secondary lesions develop, may cause permanent alterations to hoof structure that predispose to ongoing lameness problems. Prevention through appropriate nutritional management, environmental modifications, and attention to transition cow care is far more effective than treatment of established disease.
