Fowl pox affects virtually all species of poultry and wild birds, though chickens and turkeys are most commonly diagnosed in agricultural settings. The disease occurs worldwide and is particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions where mosquito populations thrive year-round. In temperate climates, outbreaks typically peak during late summer and fall when mosquito activity is highest. Both commercial operations and backyard flocks are susceptible, with the disease causing significant economic losses in affected poultry populations.
The economic and welfare impact of fowl pox can be substantial, particularly when the wet form affects a flock. Infected birds experience decreased feed consumption, reduced egg production, poor weight gain, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. Mortality rates vary considerably depending on the form of the disease, with dry pox causing minimal deaths in otherwise healthy flocks while wet pox can result in mortality rates of 50 percent or higher due to respiratory obstruction and starvation. The disease also causes downgrading of carcasses at processing due to skin lesions, creating additional economic losses for meat producers.
