This aggressive cancer originates from the urothelial cells that line the inner surface of the bladder, urethra, and occasionally the ureters and kidneys. The condition accounts for approximately two percent of all canine cancers, though its prevalence is significantly higher in certain breeds. Urothelial carcinoma typically affects middle-aged to older dogs, with the average age of diagnosis occurring around eleven years, and female dogs appear to be affected more frequently than males.
The development of urothelial carcinoma involves the malignant transformation of the transitional epithelial cells that line the urinary tract. These cells normally provide a protective, flexible barrier that can stretch as the bladder fills and contracts during urination. When these cells undergo cancerous changes, they begin to grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that most commonly develop in the trigone region of the bladder, where the ureters enter and the urethra exits. This location makes complete surgical removal particularly challenging, as the trigone contains critical structures necessary for normal urinary function. The cancer can invade deeply into the bladder wall and frequently metastasizes to regional lymph nodes and distant organs.
The impact of urothelial carcinoma on affected dogs can be substantial, significantly affecting their quality of life and daily comfort. Dogs with this condition often experience progressive urinary difficulties, including frequent urination, straining to urinate, and blood in the urine. As the tumor grows, it can obstruct urine flow, leading to life-threatening complications such as kidney damage from urine backup. The discomfort associated with this cancer can cause behavioral changes, decreased activity, and reduced appetite. Understanding this condition helps owners recognize warning signs early and seek appropriate veterinary care promptly.
While urothelial carcinoma carries a guarded prognosis, advances in veterinary oncology have improved treatment options and survival times for affected dogs. Early detection significantly influences outcomes, as smaller tumors are more responsive to treatment and less likely to have spread. Treatment typically involves a combination of medical management with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that have anti-tumor properties, chemotherapy, and sometimes surgical intervention or radiation therapy.
