The tumor's behavior, growth rate, and tendency to spread depend on its cellular origin and differentiation.
Tracheal tumors significantly impact respiratory function by obstructing airflow through the windpipe. As tumors grow into the tracheal lumen, they progressively narrow the airway, leading to increased respiratory effort and characteristic breathing sounds. The severity of symptoms depends on the degree of obstruction, with significant compromise occurring when tumors occlude more than half of the tracheal diameter. Tumors arising from the outer tracheal wall may compress the trachea from outside, producing similar obstructive effects. Left untreated, tracheal tumors can progress to cause life-threatening airway obstruction.
Treatment options for tracheal tumors vary based on tumor type, location, extent, and the patient's overall condition. Surgical removal offers the best chance for cure when tumors are localized and amenable to complete excision. Advances in veterinary surgery have expanded options for tracheal resection and reconstruction, though the procedure remains technically challenging. Radiation therapy, stenting, and palliative measures provide alternatives for cases not suitable for surgery. Early detection and appropriate intervention are essential for achieving the best possible outcomes, making prompt veterinary evaluation of respiratory symptoms critically important.
