Staphylococci also frequently cause otitis externa, infection of the ear canal, and can infect wounds, surgical sites, and urinary tract. Deep infections may involve bones, joints, or internal organs. The clinical appearance ranges from mild redness and pustules to extensive draining wounds, depending on infection severity and host immune response.
Treatment of staphylococcal infections requires appropriate antibiotic selection, adequate treatment duration, and management of any underlying conditions that predispose the dog to infection. Culture and sensitivity testing is increasingly important due to rising antibiotic resistance. Topical therapies play an important role, particularly for skin infections, and may allow successful treatment while minimizing systemic antibiotic use. Identifying and addressing underlying factors such as allergies, hormonal imbalances, or immune dysfunction is crucial for preventing recurrent infections. Working closely with a veterinarian ensures proper diagnosis, appropriate treatment selection, and successful long-term management.
