Spondylitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the vertebral bodies in dogs, leading to pain, stiffness, and potential neurological complications if left untreated. The term spondylitis specifically refers to inflammation of one or more vertebrae and is distinct from spondylosis, which involves degenerative changes. When the intervertebral discs are also involved, the condition is referred to as discospondylitis, which is one of the more commonly encountered forms of spinal infection in veterinary medicine.
The inflammation associated with spondylitis may arise from infectious agents, immune-mediated processes, or in some cases may be idiopathic in nature. Bacterial infections are the most frequently identified cause, with organisms reaching the vertebrae through hematogenous spread from distant sites of infection. Fungal organisms can also be responsible, particularly in regions where systemic mycoses are endemic. Regardless of the underlying cause, the inflammatory process can erode vertebral bone, compromise structural integrity, and potentially compress the spinal cord or nerve roots.
Spondylitis can affect dogs of any age, though it is most commonly diagnosed in young adult to middle-aged dogs. Large and giant breed dogs appear to be disproportionately affected, possibly due to their greater mechanical stress on the spinal column and higher incidence of certain predisposing conditions. Male dogs have been reported to develop the condition somewhat more frequently than females, though the reasons for this sex predisposition are not entirely understood.
Early recognition and treatment of spondylitis are critical to preventing irreversible spinal cord damage and chronic pain. With appropriate therapy, many dogs can achieve significant improvement or complete resolution of clinical signs. However, delays in diagnosis can lead to progressive vertebral destruction, spinal instability, and permanent neurological deficits that significantly impact quality of life.
