However, these compensatory mechanisms eventually become exhausted, leading to decompensated shock where vital organ function rapidly deteriorates.
The impact of shock on a dog's health is profound and affects every organ system. The brain, heart, kidneys, liver, and gastrointestinal tract all suffer damage from inadequate oxygen delivery. Cellular metabolism shifts from efficient aerobic pathways to inefficient anaerobic pathways, producing lactic acid and other waste products that further damage tissues. Without intervention, this cascade of cellular damage becomes irreversible, even if blood flow is later restored. The longer shock persists, the greater the likelihood of permanent organ damage or death, making rapid recognition and treatment essential.
Treatment of shock focuses on restoring adequate tissue perfusion as quickly as possible while addressing the underlying cause. Different types of shock may require different specific interventions, but all share the goal of improving oxygen delivery to tissues. Emergency stabilization typically involves aggressive intravenous fluid therapy, oxygen supplementation, and cardiovascular support. Early recognition and rapid treatment significantly improve survival rates and reduce the risk of permanent complications.
