These cysts form from abnormal cells lining the kidney tubules and progressively enlarge over time, gradually replacing normal functional kidney tissue. The condition typically affects both kidneys and may also involve the liver in some cases. The development of polycystic kidney disease follows a predictable pattern determined by the underlying genetic defect. Cysts begin forming during fetal development or early life and continue to grow and multiply throughout the dog's lifetime. The genetic mutations responsible affect proteins involved in maintaining normal kidney tubule structure, leading to abnormal cell growth and cyst formation.
