Ovarian tumors are neoplasms that develop in the ovaries of intact female dogs, arising from the various cell types that comprise these complex reproductive organs. The ovaries contain multiple cell populations including epithelial cells covering the surface, germ cells that produce eggs, and specialized stromal or sex cord cells that produce reproductive hormones. Tumors can develop from any of these cell types, resulting in a diverse group of neoplasms with varying biological behaviors ranging from benign growths to aggressive malignant cancers. Ovarian tumors account for a relatively small percentage of all canine tumors, occurring almost exclusively in intact female dogs that have not been spayed.
The three major categories of ovarian tumors in dogs are epithelial tumors, germ cell tumors, and sex cord-stromal tumors, each with distinct characteristics and behaviors. Epithelial tumors, including adenomas and adenocarcinomas, arise from the cells covering the ovarian surface and are the most common type in dogs. Sex cord-stromal tumors, which include granulosa cell tumors and thecomas, develop from hormone-producing cells and frequently cause significant hormonal abnormalities. Germ cell tumors, such as teratomas and dysgerminomas, originate from the cells that normally develop into eggs. The specific tumor type significantly impacts prognosis, with some types being relatively benign while others can spread aggressively to distant sites.
Ovarian tumors impact canine health through several mechanisms depending on tumor type and behavior. Many ovarian tumors produce reproductive hormones including estrogen, causing systemic effects throughout the body. This hormonal production can lead to prolonged estrus, vulvar swelling, attractiveness to male dogs, bone marrow suppression, and increased risk of pyometra. Large tumors may cause abdominal distension, discomfort, and pressure on adjacent organs. Malignant tumors can spread within the abdominal cavity or metastasize to distant sites including the lungs and lymph nodes. The non-specific nature of early symptoms often delays diagnosis until tumors have grown substantially.
The prognosis for dogs with ovarian tumors varies considerably based on tumor type, size, and whether spread has occurred. Benign tumors and low-grade malignancies are often cured by surgical removal through ovariohysterectomy. More aggressive tumors, particularly those with abdominal spread or distant metastasis, carry a more guarded prognosis. Early detection when tumors are small and localized offers the best outcomes, emphasizing the importance of prompt veterinary evaluation when reproductive abnormalities are noted in intact female dogs. Complete surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus eliminates the source of tumor and hormonal abnormalities in most cases.
