This aggressive neoplasm arises from melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells found in the tissues of the mouth, including the gums, tongue, lips, palate, and inner cheeks. Oral melanoma accounts for approximately thirty to forty percent of all oral tumors in dogs and is characterized by its locally invasive nature and high tendency to metastasize to regional lymph nodes and distant organs, particularly the lungs. The development of oral melanoma involves the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal melanocytes within the oral tissues. Unlike benign pigmented lesions, malignant melanomas grow rapidly, invade surrounding structures including bone, and readily spread through the lymphatic system and bloodstream to establish secondary tumors elsewhere in the body. Surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment when the tumor can be completely excised with adequate margins, though this often requires aggressive procedures including partial jaw removal. Radiation therapy is highly effective for local tumor control and is frequently used as an adjunct to surgery or as primary treatment for tumors that cannot be completely removed surgically. The development of the canine melanoma vaccine represents a breakthrough in veterinary oncology, offering immunotherapy that can extend survival times when used in combination with local treatments.
