Without intervention, liver failure is uniformly fatal.
Treatment for liver failure focuses on addressing the underlying cause when possible while providing intensive supportive care to maintain the dog's stability and comfort. Early detection of advancing liver disease offers the best opportunity for intervention before complete failure occurs. However, even with aggressive treatment, the prognosis for liver failure is often guarded to poor depending on the extent of damage and the underlying cause. Veterinary care is absolutely essential, as liver failure cannot be managed at home and requires sophisticated medical intervention to optimize outcomes.
