Viral and bacterial enteritis from various causes produces the intestinal inflammation and abnormal motility that predispose to this complication. Intestinal masses including tumors, polyps, and abscesses can serve as lead points around which intussusception develops. Previous abdominal surgery may create adhesions or areas of altered motility that contribute to intussusception development.

Distinguishing intussusception from conditions with similar presentations ensures appropriate treatment. Intestinal foreign body obstruction causes similar obstruction but through a different mechanism. Gastric dilatation-volvulus involves the stomach rather than the intestines but represents an equally urgent emergency. Severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis produces bloody diarrhea mimicking intussusception but without mechanical obstruction. Intestinal volvulus, where a loop of intestine twists on itself, creates similar vascular compromise. Inflammatory bowel disease may produce chronic symptoms that could be confused with mild or chronic intussusception. Proper diagnostic imaging, particularly ultrasound, differentiates these conditions and guides appropriate treatment.

Complications of intussusception extend beyond the immediate mechanical problem. Peritonitis develops when bacteria leak through the compromised intestinal wall or when perforation occurs, significantly worsening prognosis. Sepsis from bacterial translocation causes systemic illness and shock. Intestinal necrosis from prolonged vascular compromise necessitates extensive bowel resection. Short bowel syndrome may develop following very extensive intestinal resection. Recurrent intussusception can occur, particularly if underlying causes are not addressed. Adhesion formation following surgery may predispose to future intestinal problems. Post-operative ileus may delay return of normal intestinal function. Recognizing and managing these potential complications is essential for comprehensive care of affected dogs.
