Hyperkeratosis in dogs is a skin condition characterized by excessive production of keratin, the tough protein that forms the outer protective layer of the skin. This overproduction results in abnormally thickened, dry, and often cracked tissue most commonly affecting the nose leather and footpads. The term hyperkeratosis literally means excessive keratin, and the condition can range from mild roughening of the affected areas to severe thickening that causes discomfort and functional impairment for the affected dog.
The condition manifests in several forms depending on the underlying cause and affected location. Nasal hyperkeratosis specifically affects the nose, causing the normally smooth, moist nose leather to become dry, rough, and crusty. Footpad hyperkeratosis affects the paw pads, creating thickened, hard tissue that may develop feathery or frond-like projections often described as giving the appearance of hairy feet. Some dogs develop hyperkeratosis in both locations simultaneously, while others are affected in only one area.
Hyperkeratosis may occur as a primary hereditary condition in certain breeds, as a secondary manifestation of other diseases, or as an idiopathic age-related change in older dogs. Hereditary forms typically become apparent early in life and may be associated with other skin abnormalities. Secondary hyperkeratosis can result from various underlying conditions including autoimmune diseases, nutritional deficiencies, viral infections, and hormonal disorders. Idiopathic hyperkeratosis often develops gradually in senior dogs without identifiable underlying cause.
While hyperkeratosis cannot typically be cured, it can be effectively managed to maintain comfort and prevent complications. Regular removal of excess keratin and application of moisturizing and softening products keeps affected tissues in good condition. Identifying and treating any underlying causes improves outcomes in secondary cases. With appropriate ongoing management, most dogs with hyperkeratosis maintain good quality of life and normal activity levels.
