Squamous cell carcinoma, another UV-induced malignancy, may develop in dogs with extensive sun damage and can occur alongside hemangiosarcoma. Dogs diagnosed with any sun-induced skin condition should be monitored closely for the development of additional lesions including hemangiosarcoma.

Several conditions may present with symptoms similar to cutaneous hemangiosarcoma and must be differentiated through proper diagnostic testing. Hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors that can appear identical to hemangiosarcomas on visual examination but carry an excellent prognosis and require only simple excision. Other skin tumors including melanomas, mast cell tumors, and soft tissue sarcomas may have similar appearances and require histopathology for accurate diagnosis. Hematomas resulting from trauma can mimic the appearance of vascular tumors but resolve on their own without treatment. Accurate differentiation between these conditions is essential because treatment approaches and prognoses differ dramatically.

Potential complications of cutaneous hemangiosarcoma include both local and systemic consequences of the disease. Local complications include tumor ulceration with secondary bacterial infection, chronic bleeding that can lead to anemia, and pain or discomfort from growing masses. Metastasis to the lungs represents the most common systemic complication, causing respiratory symptoms such as coughing, labored breathing, and exercise intolerance. Spread to other organs including the spleen, liver, and lymph nodes may occur, particularly with subcutaneous or advanced tumors. Complications should prompt re-evaluation of the treatment plan and may necessitate changes in the management approach or discussions about prognosis and quality of life considerations.
