Other bone tumors that may appear similar include fibrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and metastatic tumors from cancers originating elsewhere in the body.

Hemangiosarcoma at other anatomic sites represents an important related consideration, as dogs with this cancer often develop tumors at multiple locations. Splenic hemangiosarcoma is the most common form, followed by cardiac hemangiosarcoma affecting the right atrium of the heart. Hepatic, cutaneous, and muscular hemangiosarcoma also occur. Dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma at any site should be thoroughly evaluated for tumors at other locations, as multicentric disease is common. The presence of hemangiosarcoma at multiple sites indicates more advanced disease and carries a more guarded prognosis than single-site tumors. Understanding the systemic nature of this cancer helps explain why even apparently localized tumors often recur or spread despite treatment.
