Fibrotic myopathy is a progressive muscle disorder in dogs characterized by the replacement of normal muscle tissue with dense, inelastic fibrous scar tissue. This condition most commonly affects the muscles of the hindlimbs, particularly the gracilis, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus muscles located in the thigh region. The fibrous tissue that replaces healthy muscle fibers cannot contract and relax normally, leading to a characteristic mechanical lameness that significantly impacts a dog's gait and mobility. While not life-threatening, fibrotic myopathy can substantially diminish a dog's quality of life if left untreated.
The development of fibrotic myopathy typically follows some form of muscle trauma or injury, though in many cases the initial insult may have been minor or gone unnoticed by the owner. When muscle tissue is damaged, the body initiates a healing response that ideally results in regeneration of functional muscle fibers. However, in fibrotic myopathy, this healing process becomes dysregulated, and excessive scar tissue forms instead of healthy muscle. This scar tissue gradually contracts over time, causing the affected muscle to become shortened and rigid. The chronic nature of this fibrosis leads to permanent structural changes within the muscle belly and its associated tendons.
The impact of fibrotic myopathy on an affected dog can range from mild gait abnormalities to severe lameness that interferes with daily activities. Dogs with this condition often develop a distinctive gait pattern where the affected limb appears to snap or jerk backward during the swing phase of movement. This occurs because the fibrotic muscle cannot stretch adequately to allow normal limb extension. The condition may affect one or both hindlimbs, with bilateral involvement typically causing more pronounced functional limitations. Working dogs, sporting dogs, and highly active breeds are particularly affected because the condition limits their ability to perform demanding physical tasks.
Treatment for fibrotic myopathy primarily involves surgical intervention to release the contracted muscle and restore more normal limb function. While surgery can provide significant improvement in gait mechanics and comfort, it is important for owners to understand that complete restoration of normal muscle function is rarely achievable. Early detection and intervention generally lead to better outcomes, making it essential for owners to seek veterinary evaluation if they notice any persistent gait abnormalities in their dogs. With appropriate management, many dogs with fibrotic myopathy can maintain good quality of life and continue to enjoy moderate levels of activity.
