Digital squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor that arises from the squamous epithelial cells of the digits in dogs, most commonly affecting the nail bed region. This cancer represents the most common type of tumor found in the digits of dogs, accounting for a significant proportion of all digital tumors. The condition typically affects a single toe initially and is characterized by destruction of the bone and soft tissue structures of the affected digit. Early recognition of changes to the toes and nails is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment, as this cancer can be locally aggressive and has the potential to spread to other parts of the body.
The squamous cells that give rise to this cancer are normally found in the outer layer of skin and in the nail bed region of the digits. When these cells undergo malignant transformation, they begin to proliferate uncontrollably and invade surrounding tissues. The tumor typically originates in the nail bed, the tissue beneath the nail, and grows into the underlying bone of the digit. This bone invasion, known as osteolysis, is a hallmark of digital squamous cell carcinoma and contributes to the pain and lameness that affected dogs experience. The destructive nature of this tumor often causes the nail to become loose, deformed, or fall off entirely.
Digital squamous cell carcinoma has a notable association with certain breeds and coat colors, with large black-coated breeds being disproportionately affected. Breeds such as Standard Poodles, Giant Schnauzers, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, and Black Labrador Retrievers are among those most commonly diagnosed. This breed and color predisposition suggests an underlying genetic component, though the specific mechanisms remain under investigation. Interestingly, black-coated dogs often develop these tumors on their black-pigmented digits rather than on any lighter-colored toes, further highlighting the relationship between pigmentation and cancer risk in this location.
The prognosis for dogs with digital squamous cell carcinoma depends on several factors, including the extent of disease at diagnosis and whether the cancer has spread. When the tumor is confined to a single digit and has not metastasized, surgical amputation of the affected toe can be curative in many cases. Dogs adapt remarkably well to the loss of a single digit and typically return to normal activity after recovery. However, because digital squamous cell carcinoma can spread to lymph nodes and lungs, thorough staging is important to assess the extent of disease and guide treatment decisions. With appropriate treatment, many dogs with localized digital squamous cell carcinoma have good long-term outcomes.
