As cavities progress through the enamel into the underlying dentin and eventually the pulp chamber, dogs may experience increasing levels of pain and sensitivity. Advanced caries can lead to pulp exposure, tooth root abscesses, and systemic infections if bacteria enter the bloodstream. The quality of life effects include difficulty eating, reluctance to chew on hard foods or toys, and behavioral changes associated with chronic oral pain. Treatment for dental caries in dogs depends on the severity and extent of the decay. Early-stage cavities may be amenable to dental restoration procedures similar to fillings used in human dentistry, though this requires specialized veterinary dental equipment and expertise.
