Conditions producing similar symptoms that must be differentiated from craniomandibular osteopathy include masticatory muscle myositis, temporomandibular joint disorders, and bone infections. Masticatory muscle myositis causes jaw pain and swelling but affects the muscles rather than bones and can be distinguished through blood tests and imaging. Osteomyelitis of the jaw produces bone changes visible on radiographs but typically affects a single area and may be associated with dental disease or penetrating injury. Bone tumors can occur in the jaw region and must be ruled out, particularly in atypical presentations or older dogs. Accurate differentiation between these conditions is essential because treatment approaches differ significantly.

Complications that may develop in dogs with craniomandibular osteopathy include temporomandibular joint ankylosis (fusion), chronic jaw dysfunction, dental abnormalities, and secondary nutritional deficiencies. Joint ankylosis represents the most serious potential complication, occurring when abnormal bone growth bridges the joint space and restricts or eliminates jaw movement. Chronic dysfunction may persist even after disease resolution if significant structural changes have occurred. Dental crowding or malocclusion can result from altered jaw growth patterns. Nutritional deficiencies may develop if inadequate intake persists during the prolonged active disease phase. Early recognition and management of the primary condition helps minimize risk of these complications developing.
