Choroid plexus tumors are primary intracranial neoplasms arising from the choroid plexus, the specialized tissue within the brain's ventricular system responsible for producing cerebrospinal fluid. These tumors occur in dogs as either benign choroid plexus papillomas or malignant choroid plexus carcinomas, with the papilloma form being more common. The choroid plexus is located within the ventricles, the fluid-filled cavities within the brain, and tumors arising from this tissue characteristically project into the ventricular space while potentially also invading surrounding brain tissue. Choroid plexus tumors can occur in dogs of any breed, though some studies suggest possible increased occurrence in certain breeds, and typically affect middle-aged to older animals.
The development of choroid plexus tumors involves abnormal proliferation of the epithelial cells that line the choroid plexus and produce cerebrospinal fluid. The cause of this abnormal growth is unknown, as is true for most brain tumors. These tumors often cause hydrocephalus, an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles, either by overproducing fluid, blocking normal fluid flow pathways, or impairing fluid absorption. The resulting increased pressure within the skull contributes significantly to the clinical signs observed and distinguishes choroid plexus tumors from other brain tumor types.
The impact of choroid plexus tumors on affected dogs relates to both the direct effects of the mass and the secondary effects of hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure. Symptoms develop gradually in most cases, beginning with subtle behavioral or neurological changes that progress as the tumor grows and hydrocephalus worsens. Dogs may develop headache-like symptoms, vision changes, balance problems, and cognitive decline. Seizures can occur though may be less common than with tumors arising directly from brain parenchyma. The progressive nature of the condition without treatment leads to worsening neurological function and declining quality of life.
Treatment of choroid plexus tumors offers potentially favorable outcomes compared to many other brain tumor types, particularly when the tumor is a benign papilloma that can be surgically removed. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice and can be curative for well-circumscribed papillomas. Radiation therapy provides an additional treatment option, particularly for incompletely resected tumors or malignant carcinomas. Medical management with corticosteroids and medications to reduce cerebrospinal fluid production can provide temporary symptom relief. The prognosis for dogs with choroid plexus papilloma treated surgically is often quite good, with many dogs achieving long-term survival. Carcinomas carry a more guarded prognosis due to their invasive nature and potential for spread through cerebrospinal fluid pathways.
