Kidney cancer in dogs encompasses a group of neoplastic conditions that originate within the renal parenchyma, renal pelvis, or surrounding renal tissues. While primary renal tumors account for a relatively small percentage of all canine neoplasms, they carry significant clinical importance due to their potential for aggressive local behavior, metastatic spread, and impact on renal function. The kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering blood, maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, producing hormones, and eliminating metabolic waste products, and tumors affecting these structures can compromise these essential functions.
The most common primary malignant kidney tumor in dogs is renal cell carcinoma, also known as renal carcinoma or renal adenocarcinoma. This tumor arises from the epithelial cells of the renal tubules and represents approximately 50 to 65 percent of all primary renal neoplasms in dogs. Other malignant renal tumors include transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis, renal lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma, and various sarcomas. Nephroblastoma, also known as Wilms tumor, is a rare embryonal tumor that is occasionally seen in younger dogs.
Benign renal tumors, though less clinically significant than their malignant counterparts, also occur in dogs. Renal adenomas, fibromas, and hemangiomas are among the benign neoplasms that may be incidentally discovered during imaging studies performed for other reasons. Renal cysts, while not true neoplasms, can sometimes be confused with tumors on imaging and must be differentiated through further diagnostic evaluation.
The diagnosis of kidney cancer in dogs is often delayed because clinical signs tend to be nonspecific in the early stages. Many renal tumors are discovered incidentally during routine health screenings or during diagnostic workups for unrelated conditions.
