Canefield fever is a specific clinical presentation of leptospirosis in dogs caused primarily by the Leptospira australis serovar. The name originates from its historical association with workers and animals in sugarcane fields, where the bacterium thrives in warm, moist soil and stagnant water. Dogs become infected through direct or indirect contact with the urine of carrier animals, most commonly rodents, or through exposure to contaminated water sources, mud, and wet vegetation.
The Leptospira organism is a spirochete, a type of spiral-shaped bacterium that penetrates mucous membranes and broken skin to enter the bloodstream. Once inside the body, the bacteria rapidly multiply and disseminate to major organs, with a particular affinity for the kidneys and liver. The resulting damage to these organs drives the clinical signs observed in affected dogs, ranging from mild malaise to life-threatening organ failure.
Canefield fever has been recognized in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including Australia, Southeast Asia, parts of Central and South America, and the southern United States. The disease tends to peak during warm, wet seasons when environmental conditions favor bacterial survival. Agricultural areas with poor drainage, flooded pastures, and high rodent populations present the greatest risk for canine exposure.
Because canefield fever is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans, prompt identification and treatment in dogs is important not only for the health of the animal but also for the protection of the household and community. Veterinary professionals consider leptospirosis a reportable disease in many jurisdictions, and confirmed cases may trigger public health notifications.
