Candidiasis is a fungal infection in dogs caused by yeast organisms of the genus Candida, most commonly Candida albicans. Unlike many other fungal diseases that result from environmental exposure to soil-dwelling organisms, Candida species are normal inhabitants of the canine body, residing in small numbers on the skin, in the gastrointestinal tract, and on mucous membranes. Candidiasis develops when disruption of normal body defenses or microbial balance allows these opportunistic yeasts to overgrow and cause clinical disease. This condition represents an imbalance rather than an external infection, making it fundamentally different from systemic mycoses like blastomycosis or histoplasmosis.
Candida organisms are present as part of the normal microbiome in healthy dogs, kept in check by the immune system and competition from beneficial bacteria. When factors disrupt this balance, Candida can transition from harmless commensal to pathogenic organism. Prolonged antibiotic therapy that eliminates competing bacteria is one of the most common predisposing factors. Immunosuppression from disease or medications, diabetes mellitus, and other conditions affecting host defenses create favorable conditions for Candida overgrowth. The yeast organisms proliferate and invade tissues, causing inflammation and clinical signs that vary depending on the body site affected.
The impact of candidiasis on affected dogs ranges from mild localized discomfort to significant systemic illness. Mucocutaneous candidiasis affecting the skin, ears, or oral cavity causes itching, redness, discharge, and discomfort that affects daily comfort and quality of life. Gastrointestinal candidiasis can cause digestive disturbances including diarrhea, vomiting, and poor nutrient absorption. Urinary tract candidiasis produces signs similar to bacterial urinary infections. Rarely, severely immunocompromised dogs may develop disseminated candidiasis affecting internal organs, representing a life-threatening condition requiring aggressive intervention.
Treatment of candidiasis involves antifungal therapy combined with identification and management of underlying predisposing conditions. Localized infections often respond well to topical antifungal medications, while more extensive or systemic infections require oral antifungal drugs. Equally important is addressing the factors that allowed Candida overgrowth to occur. Discontinuing or modifying antibiotic therapy when possible, managing diabetes, and supporting immune function all contribute to successful resolution. Veterinary evaluation is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, as candidiasis can mimic other conditions and underlying diseases must be identified for optimal outcomes.
