Bartonellosis is an emerging infectious disease in dogs caused by bacteria of the genus Bartonella, with several species capable of infecting canines including Bartonella vinsonii subspecies berkhoffii, Bartonella henselae, Bartonella clarridgeiae, and Bartonella elizabethae. These bacteria are transmitted primarily through the bites of infected fleas, ticks, and other arthropod vectors, though other transmission routes may exist. While bartonellosis has been recognized in cats for decades as the cause of cat scratch disease in humans, its importance as a canine pathogen has only been appreciated more recently, and research continues to expand our understanding of this complex infection in dogs.
Bartonella bacteria are fastidious, gram-negative organisms that infect red blood cells and the cells lining blood vessels, known as endothelial cells. This vascular tropism means the bacteria can affect virtually any organ system in the body by damaging blood vessels or triggering inflammation in affected tissues. Once transmitted to a dog through an arthropod bite, the bacteria establish persistent infection in the bloodstream that can last for months to years, often without causing obvious clinical signs. The chronic nature of infection and the diverse range of possible clinical manifestations make bartonellosis a challenging condition to diagnose and understand.
The impact of bartonellosis on affected dogs varies enormously, from completely asymptomatic carriage to severe, life-threatening disease. Many infected dogs show no clinical signs at all, serving as reservoirs for the bacteria without apparent illness. Dogs that do develop clinical disease may present with a wide variety of symptoms depending on which organ systems are affected. Heart valve infection (endocarditis), joint inflammation, liver disease, anemia, and neurological problems have all been associated with canine bartonellosis. This variability in presentation, combined with the difficulty of definitive diagnosis, means bartonellosis may be underrecognized as a cause of illness in dogs.
Bartonellosis can be treated with long-term antibiotic therapy, though treatment can be challenging due to the bacteria's ability to persist in tissues and the bloodstream. Diagnosis requires specialized testing that may not be routinely available at all veterinary practices. When suspected, treatment is typically initiated empirically while awaiting test results. Veterinary guidance is essential for proper diagnosis, treatment, and management of this infection. Prevention through flea, tick, and other vector control remains the most effective strategy for protecting dogs from bartonellosis.
