This condition occurs when the electrical impulses that coordinate heartbeats are delayed or completely blocked as they travel from the atria (upper chambers) to the ventricles (lower chambers) of the heart. The atrioventricular node, which serves as the crucial relay station between these chambers, becomes impaired in its ability to transmit signals properly. The underlying cause of atrioventricular block involves disruption to the normal cardiac conduction pathway. In a healthy heart, electrical impulses originate in the sinoatrial node, travel through the atria, pass through the AV node, and then spread through the ventricles via specialized conduction fibers. When the heart cannot maintain proper coordination between its chambers, cardiac output decreases, meaning less oxygenated blood reaches vital organs and tissues throughout the body. Dogs with significant AV block may experience exercise intolerance, weakness, fainting episodes, and in severe cases, sudden cardiac death. The condition is particularly concerning because symptoms may not be apparent until the block progresses to a dangerous degree, making regular veterinary cardiac evaluations essential for at-risk dogs.
The treatment and prognosis for atrioventricular block depend largely on the type and severity of the condition. First-degree AV block, where impulses are merely delayed, often requires only monitoring without active treatment. Second-degree blocks, where some impulses fail to conduct, may need medication or closer observation. Third-degree or complete heart block, where no impulses pass from atria to ventricles, typically requires pacemaker implantation for survival. Early detection through routine cardiac screening, particularly in predisposed breeds, allows veterinarians to implement appropriate management strategies before the condition becomes life-threatening.
