Potential complications of anal gland infection represent progression of the infectious process and emphasize the importance of prompt treatment. Abscess formation occurs when infection progresses, creating a walled-off pocket of pus that causes intense pain and requires drainage. Rupture of the abscess through the skin creates an open wound requiring wound care in addition to antibiotic therapy. Cellulitis, spreading infection through surrounding tissues, can occur if infection extends beyond the gland itself. Systemic infection or sepsis, while uncommon, represents the most serious potential complication if infection spreads into the bloodstream. Chronic recurring infection can cause scarring and permanent gland changes that ultimately require surgical removal.
