Urinary tract infections are relatively common in guinea pigs, with female guinea pigs at significantly higher risk due to their shorter urethra, which provides an easier route for bacteria to ascend into the bladder. The impact of urinary tract infection on guinea pig health ranges from mild discomfort with simple cystitis to severe systemic illness when infection ascends to the kidneys causing pyelonephritis or spreads to the bloodstream causing urosepsis. Affected guinea pigs experience pain during urination, frequent attempts to urinate, and may develop blood in their urine. The discomfort can cause decreased appetite, reduced activity, and overall decline in quality of life. Chronic or recurrent infections can lead to permanent bladder wall thickening, scarring of the urinary tract, and in severe cases, kidney damage with potential for fatal kidney failure.
Early detection and appropriate treatment with guinea pig-safe antibiotics are essential for successful resolution and prevention of complications. Most uncomplicated urinary tract infections respond well to antibiotic therapy when diagnosed promptly and treated appropriately. However, underlying causes such as bladder stones must be identified and addressed to prevent recurrence. Guinea pigs with urinary tract infections require veterinary evaluation by practitioners experienced with exotic species, as both the diagnostic approach and treatment options differ significantly from dogs and cats.
