Complications of nail bed infections include spread of infection to deeper structures and systemic effects. Osteomyelitis develops when infection extends from the soft tissue of the nail bed into the underlying bone of the toe, requiring prolonged antibiotic treatment or amputation. Septicemia occurs if bacteria enter the bloodstream, causing life-threatening systemic infection. Permanent nail loss or deformity may result from severe infections even when the infection itself is cured. Chronic pain from incompletely treated infections affects quality of life. Secondary gastrointestinal stasis may develop from stress and reduced food intake during illness. Early, aggressive treatment of nail bed infections prevents most complications.
