Potential complications of untreated or inadequately treated interdigital cysts include spread of infection to deeper structures and systemic illness. Osteomyelitis develops when infection extends from soft tissue into underlying bone, creating a much more serious condition requiring aggressive, prolonged treatment. Septicemia occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream, causing life-threatening systemic infection. Chronic cysts may develop fistulous tracts that intermittently drain but never fully heal. Severe tissue damage may result in permanent deformity or loss of function in the affected toe. Secondary complications from pain and reduced mobility include gastrointestinal stasis from inactivity and muscle wasting from disuse. Stress-related immunosuppression may allow secondary infections to develop elsewhere in the body.
