Metritis is a bacterial infection and inflammation of the uterus that can affect female guinea pigs, most commonly occurring in the postpartum period following birth or abortion. This serious reproductive condition involves bacterial invasion of the uterine wall, leading to inflammation, tissue damage, and potentially life-threatening systemic illness. Metritis differs from the related condition pyometra, which involves accumulation of pus within a closed uterus, though both conditions represent severe uterine infections requiring urgent treatment.
Metritis occurs with moderate frequency in breeding guinea pig populations and represents a significant cause of illness and death in postpartum sows. The condition typically develops within the first week after giving birth when the uterus is still recovering and the cervix remains dilated, allowing bacterial entry. Risk factors include difficult or prolonged labor, retained placentas or fetal membranes, and unsanitary birthing conditions. Nonpregnant guinea pigs can also develop uterine infections, though this is less common.
The impact of metritis on a guinea pig's health can be severe and potentially fatal. The infection causes significant pain and systemic illness, with affected sows often stopping eating, becoming extremely lethargic, and showing signs of sepsis. Bacterial toxins entering the bloodstream can cause organ damage, shock, and death if not treated promptly and aggressively. Nursing pups may be neglected as the ill sow becomes unable to care for them, and pups may become infected through close contact.
Early detection of metritis dramatically improves survival rates. Postpartum sows should be monitored closely for signs of illness including vaginal discharge, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Guinea pigs are prey animals that hide illness until severely compromised, so even subtle changes warrant immediate veterinary attention. Working with an exotic veterinarian experienced in guinea pig medicine is essential, as appropriate antibiotic selection is critical in these animals where many common antibiotics are fatal.
