This condition occurs when bacteria ascend through the reproductive tract and establish infection within the uterine environment. Endometritis represents a significant health concern for intact female guinea pigs and can range from a mild, localized infection to a severe, systemic illness that threatens the animal's life. Endometritis occurs with moderate frequency in intact female guinea pigs, with higher incidence in breeding sows and older intact females. The condition commonly develops following pregnancy, particularly after difficult births, retained placentas, or postpartum complications. However, it can also occur in females that have never been bred, arising from bacteria that normally inhabit the reproductive or gastrointestinal tract when conditions allow them to multiply abnormally. The hormonal environment of the intact uterus creates conditions that can favor bacterial growth.
The impact of endometritis on guinea pig health depends on the severity and extent of the infection. Mild cases may cause subtle symptoms such as decreased appetite and lethargy, while severe cases can progress to pyometra (accumulation of pus in the uterus), septicemia (blood infection), and potentially fatal toxemia. Even in cases that do not become immediately life-threatening, endometritis can cause chronic illness, infertility, and ongoing discomfort that significantly reduces quality of life. The uterine infection can also spread to other organs, causing secondary complications.
Endometritis is treatable, particularly when detected early, though treatment may require both medical and surgical approaches depending on the severity.
