Older guinea pigs over four years of age have higher incidence of tumors that can rupture and cause internal hemorrhage. Guinea pigs housed in groups face bite wound risks during social conflicts. Animals with known clotting abnormalities or those receiving medications affecting blood clotting require special precautions. Guinea pigs with chronic illness may have decreased physiological reserve and tolerate blood loss more poorly. Satin guinea pigs, while not specifically prone to hemorrhage, may have compromised bone density leading to fractures that could involve bleeding.

Screening recommendations for breeders focus on producing healthy guinea pigs and avoiding breeding animals with conditions that predispose to hemorrhage. Several conditions commonly co-occur with or predispose guinea pigs to hemorrhage events. Ovarian cysts are extremely common in unspayed female guinea pigs and can occasionally rupture, causing internal hemorrhage. Uterine tumors and pyometra can lead to reproductive hemorrhage. Bladder stones cause hematuria and can occasionally lead to significant bleeding, particularly with urinary tract trauma. Splenic tumors, hepatic masses, and other internal neoplasia can rupture spontaneously or with minor trauma, causing acute internal hemorrhage in older guinea pigs. Skin tumors and abscesses that become ulcerated may bleed significantly. Bumblefoot in advanced stages can involve bleeding ulcerations.

Conditions presenting with similar symptoms to hemorrhage require differentiation during diagnosis. Potential complications arising from hemorrhage include immediate and delayed problems that can affect recovery and long-term health. Hypovolemic shock from severe blood loss can cause multi-organ failure affecting the kidneys, liver, and brain. Wound infections can develop in injured tissues, requiring antibiotic treatment with guinea pig-safe medications. Adhesions may form after abdominal surgery for internal hemorrhage. Anemia following blood loss requires time and nutritional support for red blood cell regeneration. GI stasis commonly develops secondary to the stress, pain, and decreased appetite associated with hemorrhage events. Psychological trauma may cause behavioral changes in guinea pigs surviving serious hemorrhage, particularly if it resulted from attack by a cage mate or predator.
