Fetal death and resorption refers to the death of one or more developing fetuses during pregnancy in guinea pigs, followed by either reabsorption of the fetal tissue, expulsion as a miscarriage, or retention within the uterus. This condition represents a spectrum of pregnancy loss events that can occur at any stage of gestation, from early embryonic death when the conceptus may be completely reabsorbed without any visible evidence, to late-term death of fully developed fetuses that cannot be easily reabsorbed and may require intervention for removal.
Fetal death occurs with moderate frequency in guinea pig pregnancies, though the exact incidence is difficult to determine because early losses may go entirely unnoticed. Early embryonic death and resorption are particularly common and may account for smaller-than-expected litter sizes without the owner ever being aware that additional conceptuses were present. Later fetal deaths are more likely to cause clinical problems and come to veterinary attention. The condition can affect individual fetuses within a litter while others remain viable, or it can involve the entire litter.
The impact of fetal death on the sow's health varies depending on when death occurs and what happens to the deceased fetal tissue. Early resorption of small embryos typically causes no harm to the mother and may go completely unnoticed. However, death of larger, more developed fetuses presents greater challenges. These fetuses may be too large to reabsorb completely and may instead be expelled (miscarried), retained and mummified, or may begin to decompose within the uterus causing severe infection. Late-term fetal death can also lead to dystocia if the deceased fetus obstructs normal delivery of any surviving littermates.
Early detection and appropriate management of fetal death are important for protecting the health of the pregnant sow. While early resorption requires no intervention, later fetal death may require veterinary care ranging from supportive monitoring to surgical removal of retained fetal tissue. Understanding the potential causes of fetal death can help breeders and owners take steps to reduce the risk of pregnancy loss and improve outcomes for both sows and their offspring.
