Some guinea pigs remain prone to soft stools, intermittent diarrhea, or bloat after recovering from enterotoxemia. Nutritional deficiencies can develop during the acute illness when the guinea pig is not eating, and some deficiencies such as vitamin C depletion can slow recovery. Secondary infections can develop when the immune system is compromised by severe illness. Liver or kidney damage may occur from the toxemia. Psychological effects, including increased fear or anxiety around handling, may persist if the guinea pig associates handling with the illness and treatment.
