Uveodermatologic syndrome, also known as Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada-like syndrome, is an important related condition that must be distinguished from simple vitiligo. This syndrome involves both depigmentation of the skin and severe inflammation inside the eyes (uveitis). Cats with uveodermatologic syndrome develop similar-appearing white patches on the face and body but also experience painful eye inflammation that can lead to blindness if not treated promptly. Any cat with depigmentation should have a thorough eye examination to rule out this more serious condition. While vitiligo affects only skin color, uveodermatologic syndrome requires aggressive immunosuppressive treatment to preserve vision. The presence or absence of eye involvement is the key distinguishing feature between these conditions.

Solar dermatitis and squamous cell carcinoma are important complications to consider in cats with vitiligo, particularly those with depigmented areas on sun-exposed locations like the ears and nose.
