Mixed-breed cats with ancestry from high-risk purebred populations may carry inherited cardiac disease risk.

Screening recommendations for cardiomyopathy apply broadly across cat populations rather than targeting specific breeds for unclassified forms. All cats benefit from cardiac auscultation during routine veterinary examinations, which may detect murmurs or arrhythmias warranting further evaluation. Cats with any form of cardiac abnormality detected on examination should undergo echocardiographic assessment regardless of breed. Electrolyte imbalances, particularly low potassium, can result from diuretic therapy and may trigger dangerous arrhythmias. Cachexia, the progressive muscle wasting associated with chronic heart failure, affects quality of life and overall health status.
