In tracheal collapse, the cartilage loses its structural integrity, becoming soft and unable to maintain the tracheal lumen in its normal cylindrical shape. During inhalation or exhalation, depending on the location of the collapse, the weakened trachea flattens, reducing airflow. The condition may affect a portion of the trachea or the entire length, and may extend into the bronchi in severe cases.
The impact of tracheal collapse on affected cats can range from mild exercise intolerance to severe respiratory distress. The characteristic coughing and breathing difficulties associated with this condition can significantly affect quality of life. Cats may develop anxiety related to episodes of breathing difficulty, and exercise tolerance is typically reduced. In severe cases, respiratory crisis can occur, representing a life-threatening emergency. The chronic nature of the condition means affected cats require ongoing management throughout their lives. Because tracheal collapse is rare in cats, affected individuals may undergo extensive testing before the correct diagnosis is reached.
Tracheal collapse in cats is manageable but typically not curable. Medical management can control symptoms in many cases, allowing affected cats to maintain reasonable quality of life. Weight management, cough suppressants, and airway medications form the basis of medical treatment. In cases that do not respond adequately to medical management, surgical intervention may be considered, though experience with surgical treatment in cats is limited compared to dogs. Early diagnosis and consistent management provide the best outcomes.
